Student Affairs Talk: Rusty Guill
Editor’s note: This is the latest installment of the “Student Affairs Talk” podcast for 2019-20. Communications Director for Student Affairs Philip Sikes visits with various leaders from the staff and student communities. This week’s featured guest is Rusty Guill, who has served the Division of Student Affairs at Clemson for more than 30 years in a number of important capacities.
When Rusty Guill was young, he suffered an accident that left him debilitated for quite some time. He struggled to fit in with most students. It affected him so much that once he enrolled at Clemson and eventually earned his degree, Guill promised himself he would one day return to his alma mater to help students going through similar situations.
Following a brief detour into some different industries — including college athletics — Guill returned and finished his master’s degree in business administration. Less than a year later, he was hired as budget and personnel director for Student Affairs under Nick Lomax, the vice president at the time. Guill would go on to serve multiple roles under Vice President Almeda Jacks and currently serves as the division’s special assistant for family programs, working for Interim Vice President Chris Miller.
In the podcast, Guill opens up about his childhood struggles, how he overcame it with the support of a few friends and mentors, his desire to give back and pour into Clemson students and much more.
