Student Affairs Talk: Glenn Spurlin
Editor’s note: This is the latest installment of the “Student Affairs Talk” podcast for 2019-20. Communications Director for Student Affairs Philip Sikes visits with various leaders from the staff and student communities. This week’s featured guest is Glenn Spurlin, director of Orientation programs.
Shortly after Glenn Spurlin returned to Clemson in a full-time role, he sat down with his supervisor DeOnte Brown and put together a checklist two pages long of people he needed to meet. While the family feel of Clemson University had not changed much in the seven years he was gone, the campus infrastructure and people certainly had. Spurlin was a graduate assistant residential hall director with Calhoun Courts and the Shoeboxes while earning a master’s degree from 2010-12, but now he was tasked with running Orientation and introducing thousands of students and their families to life at Clemson.
Spurlin hit the ground running, using experiences gained from full-time appointments in the student affairs profession at Kansas State University and Arizona State University. All the while, he returned his family to what felt like its rightful home in Clemson. The youngest of his two children, now 7 years old, was born just days before Spurlin left for Manhattan, Kansas.
In this week’s podcast, Spurlin sets the stage for spring semester Orientation, discusses the path ambassadors take to become student leaders, reminisces on his graduate school tenure at Clemson, and much more.
