Renowned psychology author, ADD/HD expert to speak at 2015 Conference on the Value of Play
CLEMSON — Renowned psychology author Peter Gray and ADD/HD expert Kevin Ross Emery will be keynote speakers for the US Play Coalition’s 2015 Conference on the Value of Play, which will take place Feb. 15-18, 2015, at Clemson University’s Madren Center.
A research professor of psychology at Boston College, Gray is author of Psychology, the acclaimed textbook used in college introductory psychology classes throughout the U.S. and abroad. His most recent work is the book Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life.
With research interests in neuroendocrinology, developmental psychology, anthropology and education, his most recent research focuses on the role of play in human evolution and how children educate themselves through play and exploration. He will speak at the conference on “What Exactly is Play, and Why is it Such a Powerful Vehicle for Learning?”
Known as “Dr. Kevin,” Emery is recognized for his innovations in integrating coaching and counseling concepts for ADD/HD patients. Working with such companies as American Express, Hilton and Sheraton, and Dartmouth College, his trademark blend of coaching, counseling and skill development gives clients tools to empower their lives and accomplish their goals, often in less time than traditional approaches. Emery also is an accomplished author and media resource, serving as host of the radio show “Outside The Box With Dr. Kevin.” He will speak on “Managing the Gift of ADD/HD Through Play and Creativity.”
The latest research, initiatives and practices in the field of play will be presented at the Conference on the Value of Play, which brings together play researchers, parks and recreation professionals, educators, health scientists, landscape architects, business and community leaders, psychologists, physicians and parents from across the globe. In addition to the keynote speakers, the conference includes dozens of educational sessions and featured speakers, networking and collaboration opportunities, and, of course, play.

The US Play Coalition
The US Play Coalition is a partnership to promote the value of play throughout life. Formed in 2009, the coalition is housed in Clemson University’s parks, recreation and tourism management department, part of the College of Health, Education and Human Development.
