    New Feed the Future Innovation Lab aims to boost food security and alleviate poverty in developing countries with leadership from Clemson scientists

    Two Clemson University scientists who are prominent members of the global agricultural research community will play key roles in a new Feed the Future laboratory focused on tackling the global challenges of climate change, poverty and food security.

    Stephen Kresovich, the Robert and Lois Coker Trustees Endowed Chair of Genetics in Clemson’s plant and environmental sciences department, has been named director of the laboratory, and Dil Thavarajah, Clemson associate professor of pulse crop quality and nutrition, will co-lead the lab’s trait analysis team.

    Researchers to use $1.94 million grant to improve environmental education field trips

    A team of researchers recently received a $1.94 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to investigate what environmental education program characteristics matter and how they’re best delivered to maximize learning outcomes for youth participants. Researchers from Clemson University, Virginia Tech and the University of North Carolina Wilmington will visit more than 500 programs based out of numerous organizations to isolate what works in what context and for whom.

    Clemson-bred agricultural technology company puts down roots in Pee Dee region

    A company spun off from Clemson’s Advanced Plant Technology Program is putting down roots where its concept sprouted near the university’s Pee Dee Research and Education Center in Florence to serve growers along the Interstate 95 corridor and rural South Carolina by addressing a lack of feed grain hybrid crop development and a regional feed shortage.

    Statewide team lands five years of funding for biomedical research

    A group of South Carolina researchers working on new treatments for a variety of illnesses ranging from diabetes to heart disease cheered the decision to grant five years of funding to a biomedical research center based at Clemson University. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences is providing $5.7 million to the South Carolina Bioengineering Center for Regeneration and Formation of Tissues. It’s the institute’s third round of competitive funding for the center, also called SCBioCRAFT.

    A new series of events seeks to grow and enhance collaborations between the Clemson University research enterprise and industry. The first event of the INPSIRE series will offer small businesses and Clemson research faculty, staff and students the opportunity to learn the aspects of writing Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants.

    Physicist Miguel Larsen receives NASA’s top honor for pioneering work on Earth’s upper atmosphere

    Clemson University College of Science professor emeritus Miguel Larsen, who has fundamentally changed the scientific community’s understanding of the Earth’s upper atmosphere, received NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Medal on Aug. 28 at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. The medal is the highest honor the space agency bestows to non-government personnel.

    New study explains how salamanders harness regeneration to buffer themselves from climate change

    September 10, 2019

    Researchers from Clemson University’s College of Science have shown for the first time that salamanders inhabiting the southern Appalachian Mountains use temperature rather than humidity as the best cue to anticipate changes in their environment. Significantly, the researchers observed that salamanders actually harness their unique ability to regenerate limbs to rapidly minimize the impact of hot temperatures.
