Clemson’s College of Education will partner with Florence School District 1 to provide a full cohort of the school district’s teachers its certificate of online teaching. The certificate program addresses concepts such as instructional design, strategies to enhance engagement and the evaluation of student learning in online formats and will allow the teachers to apply to the South Carolina State Department of Education for an add-on endorsement in online teaching. According to College of Education faculty, the sudden need for educators to transition to online formats during the COVID-19 pandemic has made continuing education programs focused on online and hybrid delivery especially attractive to school districts.
An article written by Clemson University faculty argues that black youth face challenges that shape where they play, who they play with and how they engage in recreational activities. The article, “Playing While Black,” has gained attention from scholars across the U.S. since it was first published in Leisure Sciences, an interdisciplinary journal. The article emphasizes the significant role that racial profiling has on creating a sense of danger associated with participating in recreational activities in public spaces.

A Clemson program that provides group mentoring and youth development via bicycle has teamed with a nonprofit bike shop to continue delivering an earn-a-bike program during COVID-19. Momentum Bike Clubs (MBC), a community initiative of the Clemson University Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life, has teamed with Village Wrench, a bike shop and nonprofit based out of Greenville, to deliver the mentoring program for the last several months.
Clemson University faculty and staff in coordination with the United Way and Ten at the Top have created the Food Access Map, an interactive map that provides information on different food resources across the Upstate for individuals and families facing food insecurity. The map was created as part of Clemson's efforts to aid Upstate residents facing hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic. It includes nearly 400 providers across 10 counties complete with information on the type of assistance they provide as well as operating hours and availability.
The Clemson University Palmetto Poll recently gathered data from South Carolina residents to gauge their concern regarding the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the state and national response to it. In addition to providing a general glimpse into residents’ concerns with the pandemic, the survey revealed major differences in attitudes toward government response along partisan, racial and ethnic lines.
