A legacy of generosity
She was not a Clemson University alumna, but Ms. Davy-Jo Stribling Ridge’s family had strong Clemson ties. Her father and two uncles earned degrees at Clemson, and her paternal grandfather, James P. Stribling, was instrumental in convincing the state legislature to accept Thomas G. Clemson’s bequest to establish an agricultural college, which later became Clemson University.
To honor her family’s legacy and support Clemson academics, Ridge established several scholarships:
- For her father, The David Warren Stribling Student Assistance Endowment in Electrical Engineering in honor of his pioneering work in rural electrification
- For her mother, the Thelma Braselton Stribling Student Assistance Endowment in Horticulture in honor of her beautiful gardens and landscaping at the family home, Walnut Hill plantation
- For her grandfather, the James Pal Stribling Student Assistance Endowment in Agricultural Education in honor of his role in having the state legislature vote to accept Thomas G. Clemson’s bequest
- For her grandmother, the Bessie Conger Stribling Student Assistance Endowment in History in honor of her having been a noted historian
When she established these endowments, Ridge gave full flexibility for the endowments to provide income for scholarships, fellowships or program needs. As unrestricted gifts, funds can be used where needs are the greatest.
The scholarship honoring her father is particularly meaningful to the College of Engineering and Science. The David Warren Stribling Student Assistance Endowment in Electrical Engineering will touch the lives of countless future electrical engineering students studying in the Holcombe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Ridge, with thoughtful generosity, made substantial provisions in her estate to add to the student assistance endowments after her death so that the benefits can continue to grow. The Davy-Jo Stribling Ridge legacy will live on, and will hopefully inspire some of these future beneficiaries to follow her example in supporting these endowments with their own resources.
