Women’s Leadership Conference aims to create sense of support and community
The Hendrix Student Center at Clemson University will be converted into a full-fledged conference center on Saturday, Feb. 9 when it plays host to the school’s annual Women’s Leadership Conference. Students from Clemson’s undergraduate, graduate and doctoral population will team with leaders in the academic and Student Affairs realms to deliver presentations on a number of topics pertinent to women in today’s world.
Some of the slated presentations include challenges in STEM fields, social network utilization, empowerment, self-assessment, intersectionality of race and gender, work-life balance, combating stereotypes, finding a voice, challenging injustices and creating confidence.
“This year’s theme is ‘Rewriting the Narrative,’” said Kate Radford, associate director for Student Involvement and Leadership. “We encourage students, faculty, staff, alumni and others to join us as we create a sense of support and community surrounding issues facing women as we pursue our paths together.”
The event begins with check-in on the second floor of Hendrix from 8-9 a.m. A welcome session will be held in the Almeda Jacks Ballrooms before breakouts into two hour-long sessions in the morning and two more following lunch. The conference wraps up by 4 p.m.
A keynote address will be delivered by Glenis Redmond, a poet, teaching artist and imagination activist with ties to Upstate South Carolina. Redmond founded Peace Voices in 2011, a program dedicated to poetic outreach and engagement in the community through The Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville. Redmond’s work has aired on National Public Radio (NPR), and she is twice a past winner of the Southern Fried Poetry Slam and twice a top-10 finalist in the National Poetry Slam.
