Meet a Tiger: Patricia Figueroa
What I do at Clemson: I oversee all of the fitness and wellness programs within Campus Recreation. This includes group fitness, personal training, massage therapy, small group training, and the Wellness Zone! My team of interns, grad assistants and I have come up with a wellness theme every month (think: Self-Care, Movember, Heart Health, etc.) and we create activities and events centered around the eight dimensions of wellness in and around the Wellness Zone in addition to keeping our fitness opportunities fresh and welcoming for the whole Clemson Family.
What I love about Clemson: I love how health- and fitness-centered this community is. We live in an incredible environment to have plenty of outdoor time, eat fresh local food, and interact with other health-conscious people. Clemson really promotes well-being, and so many students, faculty and staff, and community members are taking advantage of this! I love living and working in a place with healthy and happy people!
Accomplishment I’m most proud of: Honestly, finding my passion in life. After changing my major a few times, 5.5 years in undergrad (victory lap, anyone?), and searching for other opportunities in grad school, I never realized that what would make me happiest was sitting right under my nose. I was too afraid of making the “wrong” choice in life and ending up in something that I didn’t enjoy. I worked in Campus Recreation all throughout undergrad, and I’m glad I finally realized that this is what makes my heart truly full. “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life” couldn’t be more true, and I’m so proud of myself for finding a career where I can play every day!
Where I see myself in five years: No idea, and I’m ok with that. I take life day by day, never pass up any good opportunity, and have complete trust in the process (shout out to my Student Affairs friends). I believe everything happens for a reason and everyone is where they are meant to be, which may be completely different than anything they expected. Life is a journey, not a destination, so might as well enjoy the ride!
Last thing I watched on TV: Probably some show on HGTV? I’m not a big TV watcher, but I love me some Fixer Upper and House Hunters!
Guilty pleasure: I like to think that I don’t have any guilty pleasures because I don’t feel guilty about the things that I enjoy! But…if I had to say anything, it would definitely be buying water bottles and workout clothes. Get me near any of those sections in a store and I quickly see I have zero self-control.
One thing most people don’t know about me: I got into college as one of four accepted into the Bachelor of Fine Arts program for acting at the University of Florida. Yup, I was one of those theater people. Quickly realized that life was not for me, but it was pretty cool nonetheless! I can say it’s made me a better group fitness instructor though!
