Creating amazing things.

In every company, workers should know how to communicate visually. This Tiger teaches students how to do just that.

Meet Erica Walker.

Title: Assistant professor, department of graphic communications

Years at Clemson: 6 years

What I do at Clemson: I teach courses covering photography, video, web design and entrepreneurship. In addition to teaching, as a curriculum developer and researcher, I get the opportunity to work with super talented industry experts to design advanced courses in UX/front-end design, digital media design and short-format video storytelling.

Other than that, I love to get involved with campus events that provide students with outside-the-classroom opportunities such as student film festivals, speaker tours, Clemson Graphic Communications’ homecoming and graduation receptions in Godfrey Hall.

What I love about Clemson: Every day at Clemson is unique and challenging! The topics of photography, videography and web development (and how students interact with these subjects) are constantly changing. This pushes me to evolve continually how I approach teaching. My favorite part is seeing students find a subject that they are passionate about, and suddenly, a class project becomes bigger than just an assignment.

There are so many interesting faculty, staff and students at Clemson, both inside and outside my department. Each person I interact with through research or classroom projects provides valuable insight in how I approach my own work. Oh… and go Tigers!

Accomplishment I’m most proud of: Launching new courses in graphic communications in conjunction with industry experts. As part of my research, at the end of each semester I interview the instructors and students enrolled in the courses. Student feedback on this teaching model is encouraging and helps us to continue developing effective curriculum.

But, this project is not just about the research. I learn every time I work with Jeff Kallin, Nik Conklin and Santiago Gomez by observing how they interact with their students and material. I hope to continue to develop this program.

Where I see myself in five years: Continuing to work with like-minded faculty and staff across campus to bring unique opportunities to our students. And learning something new each day!

Last thing I watched on TV: Actually, we don’t have a TV. We do watch a lot of streaming content, most recently “Godless” on Netflix but I also love comedies like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Grace & Frankie.”

Guilty pleasure: Reading random fiction that I pick out based on the cover design… and camera gadgets.

One thing people don’t know about me: One summer while I was in high school, I learned to sail in northern Holland. I traveled from port to port with my Dutch friends. It was the thing to do during the summer and dozens of sailboats were navigating the channels during the day and docking in the port towns each evening. I haven’t sailed in years, but I hope to take it back up again.
