Meet a Tiger: Brandon Jones
It’s exam week! No one knows that more than this Tiger, who spends his time coaching students and educators on teaching, studying and learning strategies. This Clemson newbie, self-professed foodie and sci-fi lover is the first in his family to earn a doctorate.
Meet Brandon Jones.
Years at Clemson: Six months
What I do at Clemson: I serve as the assistant director and coordinator of advising, coaching, and learning strategy consulting in the Class of 1956 Academic Success Center.
What I love about Clemson: I love the numerous opportunities for research and exploration in my areas of interest. I’ve only been here since May and I’ve already been able to collaborate on a number of projects surrounding intercollegiate sports, academic advising, and student support.
Something most people don’t know about the Academic Success Center: The area where coaching, advising, and learning strategy consulting takes place is nicknamed, “The Bat Cave.” We take what we do seriously, but not ourselves.
Accomplishment I am most proud of: Earning my Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Texas at Arlington in May 2015. I come from a family that has a history of valuing education. My maternal great-grandfather was a pastor and served as president of an HBCU, Butler College. However, I am currently the only one with a doctorate. It was a lot of work, filled with many setbacks, but worth every bit of it.
Where I see myself in five years: Teaching, publishing research on student athletes, helping my kids get ready for elementary school and making some big moves with the Academic Success Center.
Last thing I watched on TV: Westworld. I like sci-fi thrillers!
Guilty pleasure: I’m a foodie! The only thing I think about when I’m traveling somewhere is the food destinations (and whether they have cool graphic t-shirts).
One thing most people don’t know about me: I’m a licensed minister. I’ve always had a heart for serving others and showing the love of Jesus to all people.
Anything else you would like us to know: I’m just a guy who loves good food, being around people, graphic t-shirts, Chuck Taylor’s, technology, and serving.
