Science on Tap: Eat, drink and talk about science
CLEMSON — Explore the latest ideas in science and technology with Clemson University professors and researchers during “Science on Tap,” a monthly gathering for inquiring minds at a local coffee house.
Science On Tap is committed to promoting public engagement with science and technology and to make it accessible and accountable.
“No prior scientific knowledge is needed,” said Victoria Corbin, director of education outreach in Clemson’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Science. “Our goal is to make science fun, accessible and relevant to everyone.”
The format generally is about 20 minutes of speaker presentation beginning at 6 p.m. followed by discussion until 7:30 p.m.
“It’s truly an informal, fun and educational event,” Corbin said. “Attendees can get up, eat and refresh their beverages at any time during the event.”
Science on Tap is free and open to all ages. The events will take place on the third Monday of each month at Moe Joe’s Coffee, 385 Old Greenville Highway (S.C. 93), in Clemson. Upcoming events this summer include:
- June 16: David Feliciano, assistant professor in Clemson’s department of biological sciences, will discuss how a human brain grows during embryonic, fetal and neonatal development; and the role of stem cells in building complex brain structures for his presentation “Developing Baby Brains.”
- July 21: Julie Martin, assistant professor in Clemson’s department of engineering and science education, will discuss how a person’s social connections can influence their choice of careers in her talk titled “It takes a Village to Raise an Engineer.”
- August 18: Neil Calkin, professor in Clemson’s department of mathematical sciences, unveils the mathematical underpinnings of magic tricks in his presentation “Mathematical Magic Tricks.”
- Sept 15: June Pilcher, alumni distinguished professor in Clemson’s department of psychology, will present “Brain Works: Choices and Intentions.”
