Professor receives agriculture teaching award
CLEMSON — Clemson University agricultural education professor and Agriculture Division chairman Thomas R. Dobbins was honored with a teacher fellow award from the North American Colleges & Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) at the group’s annual meeting.
The award is given annually to an agricultural educator who shows a career of distinction in teaching, research, outreach and administration.
“Tom has been doing great things at Clemson University for many years and has demonstrated a sustained commitment to hands-on teaching in the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math,” said Jeffory Hattey, the group’s president and assistant dean at Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “His work is helping fill a growing demand for students graduating with degrees in the life sciences and agricultural sciences.”
Dobbins has been at Clemson for 27 years. He has served as agricultural education program director and been professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering since 1999. He also has worked as dairy Extension associate in Clemson’s department of animal and veterinary sciences and for the South Carolina Piedmont District. He won the 2005 Cooperative Extension Superior Service Award.
In 2012, he was named agricultural division chairman in Clemson’s School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences.
“I am honored to receive this award from NACTA on behalf of Clemson. To me, the award represents Clemson’s continued commitment to its land-grant heritage of teaching, research and outreach in the areas of agriculture, environmental science and natural resources,” Dobbins said.
