CLEMSON — Senior students with futures in medical school, veterinary school, and leading companies in agriculture and natural resources were honored for academic achievement during Clemson’s College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) annual senior awards ceremony.

Austin Gregory Herbst of Easley won multiple awards, securing Blue Key Academic and Leadership Award, Phi Kappa Phi Certificate of Merit, Outstanding Senior in Genetics & Biochemistry and Martin Award. Blue Key is awarded to one senior in each of Clemson’s five colleges to honor outstanding scholarship, campus leadership and service. The Martin Award goes to the student in the life sciences with the highest GPA.

Herbst was one of several CAFLS students who earned a 4.0 GPA, but secured the Martin Award due to his double major in biochemistry and genetics, and double minor in microbiology and psychology.

Dean Askew and Emily Cook

George Askew, dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences, congratulates Emily Cook.

During his Clemson academic career, Herbst also conducted research at both Emory University and Furman University, and won a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, a top undergraduate award for students in science and engineering. His public service includes mission trips to the Dominican Republic, Hondurus and Nicaragua.

At the time of this report, Herbst had been admitted to medical school at Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt, but had not made his final decision.

Emily Katherine Cook, animal and veterinary sciences major from Middletown, Delaware, and Jennifer Robinson Wilson, plant and environmental sciences major from Charlotte joined Herbst in winning the Phi Kappa Phi Certificate of Merit. The honors society award goes to graduating seniors with high GPAs who have made important contributions through leadership, service and creative endeavors.

Cook maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while conducting research that resulted in a second-place presentation at the 2016 Southern section of the American Society of Animal Science meeting. Cook also serves as president of the Pre-Veterinary Student Club and a college ambassador. She has been accepted to two veterinary schools.

Wilson is a National Merit Scholar on Clemson’s Calhoun Honors College with a 4.0 GPA. She minors in plant pathology and has received honors in genetics and biochemistry. She has worked on numerous research projects, authored three scientific papers and presented her findings at four professional conferences. She also holds a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering, and was selected to receive a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for the upcoming school year. She will begin graduate work at Cornell University in the fall.
