CLEMSON — Clemson University professor Tom Schurch has won the 2016 Excellence in Service Learning Award, Senior Level, from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA).

CELA bestows the award annually “to honor a faculty member’s excellent accomplishments in the area of outreach or service-learning education.” Up to two awards are presented each year, one at the junior level (three-10 years of teaching) and one at the senior level (10 or more years of teaching.)

“I am honored to receive this award,” Schurch said. “However, there is no question that without the outstanding efforts of dedicated students in landscape architecture over the years and a wide range of community leaders with whom we collaborated, the recognition I have received would never have been possible.”

Schurch’s award was based in part on a number of current and recent service outreach projects across the Upstate, including activities in Greenville, Pendleton and Williamston communities.

“Tom Schurch’s work exemplifies the true definition of service learning. His career-long effort to improve communities — wherever he happens to be — is inspiring, and a great example for Clemson students,” said Richard Goodstein, dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities.

Schurch is completing his sixth year as a professor of landscape architecture and urban planning at Clemson. Prior to joining the Clemson faculty, he served 10 years as the director of the landscape architecture program at the University of Oklahoma, where he founded and directed the center for Community Based Projects. He has been a senior faculty member with tenure at Clemson, Oklahoma, Ball State and Mississippi State.

Schurch earned his Ph.D. in urban design and planning from the University of Washington and a Master of Landscape Architecture from California State Polytechnic University Pomona. He is a licensed landscape architect in California, a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
