Clemson professor Joseph Mazer recognized among top 10 prolific communication scholars
CLEMSON — Clemson University associate professor Joseph Mazer has been ranked among the top 10 most productive scholars in communication nationwide, according to a study published in the journal Communication Education.
Communication Education identified the most prolific communication scholars based on their publication rates, and this ranking places Mazer in the top 1 percent of prolific scholars in the discipline in the past 10 years.
“It is an honor to be recognized among colleagues that I admire so deeply,” said Mazer, who also serves as associate chair of the department of communication and director of the Social Media Listening Center.
From 2012 to 2016, Mazer published 14 articles and was ranked as the 10th most-productive scholar in the discipline. He is one of 3,889 scholars whose productivity was analyzed in the study.
To be ranked in the top 1 percent, authors must publish at least nine scholarly articles in five years.
Mazer’s research examines communication in teaching and learning contexts, social media and new technologies; communication in interpersonal relationships; and measurement issues and trends in communication research. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and other organizations and discussed in media outlets, including USA Today, The Chronicle of Higher Education and ESPN.
“The importance of studying the role of communication in our society has never been clearer,” Mazer said. “Scholars from all areas of the communication discipline harness the power of our research to better understand and improve the world in which we live. I am honored to be included among this group.”
Mazer is dedicated to his research, students and work at Clemson, said Eric Muth, College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences associate dean for research.
“Joe works tirelessly to engage students and the larger community in his work through the Social Media Listening Center,” Muth said. “This honor is a testament to the impact of his efforts.”
Earlier this year, Mazer was recognized as one of the most influential scholars in the field of instructional communication.
In 2012, Mazer was also recognized in the top 1 percent of productive scholars by Communication Education and was ranked No. 21 for productivity between 2007 and 2011.
