CLEMSON — Clemson University has received national recognition as a Bicycle Friendly University at the bronze level by the League of American Bicyclists. Clemson is one of 58 schools to earn the designation.

The league’s Bicycle Friendly University program recognizes institutions of higher education for promoting and providing a more bicycle-friendly campus for students, staff and visitors.

There are four designation levels – bronze, silver, gold, and platinum – and the recognition stands for several years. In the future, Clemson will be able to reapply for designation at the bronze level and possible advancement to the silver level.

Clemson adopted a Bikeways Master Plan in 2012 as a part of the university’s on-going commitment to environmental sustainability and the promotion of health and wellness for active lifestyles for members of the Clemson community. This plan outlines a comprehensive network of bike lanes, shared roadways, shared-use paths and mountain biking trails that connects the entire extended campus. The plan provides a framework for developing an integrated, comprehensive bikeway network at Clemson.

“The award recognizes that Clemson is taking steps to promote and provide a more bicycle friendly campus,” said Tanya DeOliveira, a campus planner. “The adoption of the University Bikeways Master Plan, installation of several bikeways this summer and the on-going efforts of the Bike Safety Committee demonstrate Clemson’s dedication to this idea.”

The university also relies on the CU Bike program hosted by campus recreation’s Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE) program. This program gives the Clemson community opportunities for more convenient and sustainable transportation by offering commuter bicycle rentals and tools for bike repair through a bike shop at the campus beach.

May is National Bike Month, and to celebrate, Clemson’s parking and transportation services department is holding its first Clemson Bike Week May 20-24. A number of events are planned to promote bicycling on campus. For a full schedule, visit
