Clements to help set business, education agenda
CLEMSON — When more than 50 leaders of Fortune 500 companies, national education associations and major colleges and universities convene to discuss how business and higher education can collaborate on workforce development and economic competitiveness, Clemson University will — literally — have a seat at the table.
Clemson President James P. “Jim” Clements is one of approximately 30 higher education leaders and more than two dozen senior business executives invited to participate in the Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF) in Washington, D.C., June 19-20.
The BHEF is the nation’s oldest organization of senior business and higher education executives, committed to improving workforce competencies and career-readiness — particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education — and supporting educational innovations that enhance critical thinking, analytical reasoning and the ability to work in multicultural teams.
“This represents an opportunity to hear from leaders of companies who are hiring our graduates, learn about best practices at other institutions and also to showcase the innovative programs we have here at Clemson,” Clements said. “Clemson has a great track record of listening to and working with business and industry. Our goal at this meeting is to build on that solid foundation and open as many doors as possible to benefit Clemson students and faculty.”
In addition to his membership on the BHEF, Clements serves as chairman-elect of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, chairman of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Leadership, member of the Council on Competitiveness, and was the only university president to serve on the U.S. Department of Commerce Innovation Advisory Board.
