NORTH CHARLESTON — The two largest single items of equipment at the Clemson University Restoration institute's wind-turbine drivetrain testing facility arrived via barge Thursday.

A 350,000-pound, multistory gear box and load application unit were lifted by a 500-ton crane floating on the Cooper River at the former Navy base and transported — very slowly — on a 192-wheel low-loader to the adjacent testing facility building.

Once installed, the equipment will be part of the facility's 15-megawatt wind-turbine drivetrain test rig.
