Four Clemson entities have joined together to create a video emphasizing the importance of outdoor play.

The College of Education and College of Behavioral, Social, and Health Sciences, along with the U.S. Play Coalition and South Carolina Botanical Garden, both housed at Clemson, produced “Come Outdoors with Us,” which explores the extraordinary benefits of nature on all of us, but particularly on our children’s healthy development.

Researchers in the video maintain that while children take part in indoors “screen” time, most children would rather be outside, and adults should create more opportunities for them to be there, says Marty Duckenfield, who led the team creating the video. Representatives from both colleges hope communities and schools will use information provided in the video to examine their policies on and views about outdoor play.

The video debuted at the U.S. Play Coalition’s 2018 Conference on the Value of Play, held in early April on the Clemson campus. It is part of the “Policy Matters” webcast series, created by the College of Education, College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences, and Clemson Broadcast Productions. Each of the webcasts serve as a resource for educational stakeholders including parents, educators, state and national policymakers, school boards and administrators, and business and community members.
